Destiny 2 Weapon Classes: A basic guide

Destiny 2 is a popular multiplayer game available on Xbox Series and PS5. The gameplay involves a shooter’s perspective into a storyline, the D2 Lore, where they go on relevant missions. Destiny 2, the second game in the franchise, came with a major development where two gameplay modes became available: Player versus environment and player versus player.

The developers of the game, Bungie, are very active in updating the game. Destiny 2 Lore is subject to frequent change, and there are even seasonal events that last for up to 3 months.

Here are the different kinds of weapons available:

Kinetic Weapons

This category includes weapons like hand cannons, pulse rifles, sidearms, submachine guns, and scout rifles. The whole idea behind kinetic weapons is that their main form of attack is kinetic or realted to movement. These weapons are specifically specialized to shoot bullets. Kinetic weapons pose the greatest threat to an enemy’s health. Their damage is the greatest out of all the kinds of weapons.

Energy Weapons

This category includes head cannons, auto rifles, scout rifles, pulse rifles, and SMGs. The weapons in this category overlap with the kinetic category. These weapons are specialized in shooting energy beams and bullets. There are three different elements of energy that can be shot out: arc (electricity), void (purple matter), solar (flames).

While they do not cause as much damage to enemy forces, they cause significant damage to any protective shields used by the players. This philosophy is that an energy beam from one of the elements can successfully destroy a shield from the same element.

For instance, if a solar beam is shot at the solar shield, it will instantly explode. This explosion will have a great impact on the enemy’s health. The most opted-for strategy is to destroy the shield using an energy beam and then use a kinetic weapon to eliminate the opponent.

Power weapons

This category includes shotguns, fusion rifles, sniper rifles, grenade launchers, rocket launchers, and swords. These are the classic weapons brought from the original game Destiny. These weapons are powered using special ammunition obtained when the enemy’s health declines. These are by far the most powerful weapons in the games.

Since the ammunition is rare, these weapons must be used on special occasions, such as when confronting the enemy’s boss or areas where the enemies are in the highest concentrations.

When to use what weapons

Understanding the basic function of each weapon will help you devise a core strategy as to what weapons to use when. The most common strategy designed by the game itself when taking down shielded opponents is to use an energy weapon first to get rid of the shield. Then, the player must use a kinetic weapon to finish off the enemy.
